Second Life is leaking into real life

Second Life, for those of you who haven’t encountered it, is a virtual world that is slowly making its way into our every day world (now containing almost 7 million “residents”). Businesses, average people, media, movie stars – they’re all making a presence for themselves in Second Life because they can date, have meetings, and make money (Linden dollars) just like they can outside of the computerized world.

It has been something my colleagues and clients have been watching closely and debating. Is it worth getting involved in Second Life? What are the risks? What are the rewards? (The US spent $1,738,879 over the last 24 hours alone) What should my avatar wear?(fashion is just as important in the virtual world) I’m still skeptical on the average person’s likelihood of hopping on board with this, but have a feeling that this virtual world will catch on as soon as the demanding system requirements necessary to operate it are lessened.

Seeing that the next Die Hard (numero 4) movie did a Second Life news conference to promote the film with commentary by a little virtual Bruce Willis (he was 90 minutes late by the way) convinces me all the more that marketing in this space will soon be a part of regular business. Personally, I find real life busy and fun enough not to waste my free time in front of a computer (it’s not like I don’t get enough of that at work or anything). But whatever floats your boat!
